MEETING
Monday, November 5, 2007
At the Varnum Armory
6 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI
PROGRAM: The speaker at November’s meeting will be Professor Barton Levi St. Armand of Brown University. The subject will be antiques related to funerary rites and mourning. This field encompasses mourning pictures, needlework, photographs, clothing and many other antiques which today seem arcane, bizarre or even spooky; this in spite of the fact that many of these display great artistry and craftsmanship. In addition to his collection, Professor St. Armand has studied this field through literature and documents as an adjunct to his research on Emily Dickinson. We can expect Mr. St. Armand to please us with a stimulating and erudite antiquarian evening.
HOLIDAY SHOW: Contracts are due for the upcoming holiday show at the Crowne Plaza. At November’s general meeting, there will be a discussion concerning future show venues. A refundable deposit has been made to the Crowne Plaza for the 2008 holiday show in order to reserve our date. The spring show is scheduled to take place at the Ramada Inn in Seekonk.
Peel ‘n Stick: Jacqui Nye has scheduled the Peel ‘n Stick Party (to address promotional cards for the holiday show) for Monday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at her home, 188 Mapleton Street, in Cranston. Please call Jacqui to let her know if you will be attending—401-461-0971.
You Can Help: There is a need for volunteers to “man” the reception table at the Holiday Show. Call Jacqui if you would be willing to help for an hour to two.
HOLIDAY TRIP: Gayl Spodaryk is putting together a fun event for anyone interested in visiting the Fall River Historical Society during the holiday season. A Victorian High Tea will be served with seasonal decorations and themes featured. The cost is $25.50 per person and Gayl is willing to drive for those who might wish to carpool. Call Gayl and let her know if you would like to go and she will explain the details as well as possible dates and times.
Gayl can be reached at: 401-823-3479
