MEETING
Monday, November 6, 2006 @ 7 p.m.
at The Varnum Memorial Armory
6 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI
PROGRAM – Civil War and Grand Army of the Republic artifacts and collectibles with speaker, Mr. Greg Mierka. Caretaker of the General Nathaniel Greene Homestead in Coventry, R.I., Mr. Mierka is a noted historian of both the Revolutionary and Civil War conflicts. As past president of the Sons of Union Veterans, he is well-suited to speak about post civil war veterans’ organizations and the very collectible range of memorabilia associated with these groups notably the “GAR.” Members who suspect they may have such items, are urged to bring them along for identification or discussion.
A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT: As we approach our Holiday Show and an antique economy that seems challenged, we should probably redouble our efforts in getting out show cards in order to bring in more customers. Please send cards to as many of your friends and past customers as possible. This is a minimal expense but can bring great advantages to all of us. If you do not have cards, please contact Lois Torman (781-2650) or any board member.
Consider your local library as a venue for getting out additional cards. Usually, permission is required from a key librarian, but once that permission is gained, there is an opportunity to reach many potential customers. Some supermarkets also have locations to distribute cards. Your participation can make a big difference!
IMPROMPTU BOOTH – This year, we will try a new feature at the Holiday show. This will be a booth made up of selected antiques from participating dealers. (Noone will be required to participate.) Our goal is to have the services of Wickford interior designer, Shannon Person who will select items to be showcased in a coherent and spectacular composite room. Arrangements will be made so that you can easily sell your showcased item. We hope that this new feature will create an exciting buzz and promote sales!
PEEL N’ STICK – The Peel n’ Stick Party (to address promotional cards for the upcoming Holiday Show) will be held on Thursday, November 9 at 6 p.m. at Mentor Antiques, Marry Gormally’s shop located at 7512 Post Road in North Kingstown, RI. This fun work-party is always a lively event—along with labeling thousands of cards, we enjoy time with other SNEADA members, sharing trade talk (as well as cat chats) and enjoy yummy treats to eat! Please respond to Charlie McCaughey at 647-7780 or 647-9179 if you plan to attend and help out.
PUBLIC RELATIONS – If you have a background in P.R., writing press releases, or are good at “getting the word out” we could really use your help. Over the years, SNEADA has been responsible for many endowments which have benefited various organizations from local museums to historical restoration projects. We also enjoy an active membership which promotes fellowship and education amongst its dealers through unique monthly programs and community-building social events. Much of this goes on without much publicity. If you have an interest in becoming our PR Person—please speak to President Richard Greene or any board member. It would be wonderful to see our association receive the attention it deserves!
HOLIDAY SHOW – Plans for the upcoming Holiday Show at the Crowne Plaza are moving along smoothly. This year’s event will be held on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25. Friday night will feature Early Buyers’ Hours from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This feature will include refreshments for buyers with the availability of a cash bar. The cost will be $12 with discount admission of $10 each. General admission times will be Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at $6 each (discount price of $5.)
