"Brimfield Rush" : The Next Best Thing to Being There
Odds are if you planned to attend the annual opening of the Brimfield Antiques & Collectibles Market in Massachusetts last May during
the worst storms and flooding New England has seen since the 1930's, you
were rained out and missed the in-person experience. You can do the next
best thing and come to the Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., East Providence,
RI, on Monday, July 10, 2006 at 7PM, to hear Bob Wyss speak about his book “Brimfield Rush: The Thrill of Collecting and the Hunt for the Big Score” (Commonwealth Editions, May 2006).
Rhode Islanders, along with people from all over the country, have
been "rushing" to Brimfield for many years. Bob Wyss, a journalism
professor at the University of Connecticut, was a writer and editor at the
Providence Journal for 28 years, covering the environment, energy, and
business issues. He has also contributed award-winning work to publications
such as the New York Times, Boston Globe, Yankee, and Rhode Island Monthly.
His coverage of the Brimfield Antiques Market has been warmly embraced by
antiques and collectibles buyers as well as Brimfield "insiders" - the
dealers, promoters, and local residents who have been participating in this
world famous market for decades.
The New England Antiques Journal says, "Brimfield has become a
mythical place in the antiques business, almost a Camelot. If you want to
know why, go to Brimfield, or read this book, or both." You can also come
to the Weaver Library on Monday, July 10, 2006 at 7 PM. Barrington Books
will be selling books and will contribute a portion of the sales to the
Friends of the East Providence Public Library. Questions? Call Joyce May
at 434-2453. This program is free and open to all.
