MEETING
Monday, April 9, 2007 @ 7 p.m.
Linden Place Mansion
500 Hope Street, Bristol, RI
PROGRAM - This month’s meeting promises to be a real delight. The Linden Place Mansion is an architectural gem. Built in 1810 for the DeWolf family, according to designs by Rusell Warren, it has been carefully restored and furnished with fine period antiques, rugs and accessories. We will begin with a personal tour of this fascinating house, followed by our general meeting in the parlor under two magnificent chandeliers. These crystal chandeliers were endowed by your very own SNEADA some years ago when the house underwent restoration. This will be a very special meeting, so please plan to attend!
Directions: Linden Place is a very prominent landmark in the center of Bristol, so it is very difficult to miss. From Providence – take Rt. 195 east to Rt. 114 south (exit 7) to Bristol. Stay on Rt. 114 south all the way to Bristol, where it becomes Hope Street. There is plenty of on-street parking in front of Linden Place, as well as behind the Colt Memorial School (Bradford, to Central Street, to Wardwell Street.)
A WORD FROM A FOUNDING MEMBER - Robert Mower, a founding member of SNEADA has recently closed his Marion, Massachusetts shop, The Hobby Horse. After 47 years as an antiques dealer, he is limiting his business to appraisals. He and his wife, Eleanor have moved to a new home at 453 Rounsville Road, Rochester, Massachusetts. Although Mr. Mower was unable to attend our roundtable discussion meeting regarding “the State of the Antiques Business” he sends us his thoughts and sage advice. He suggests that, “For most of the market, in the goods that we SNEADA dealers are likely to handle, they are in a freefall for at least another 4 to 5 years . . . with an exception for legitimate Asian goods (not goods made for other markets.) Mr. Mower also advises, “By sticking together, we all did better in the past than by trying to go it totally alone.”
SPRING SHOW – Our thanks to Charlie and Karen McCaughey and the entire show committee on the success of the Spring Show at the Crowne Plaza. The quick in-and-out format netted us 646 attendees, 70 of whom were early buyers. While it is difficult to gauge the pulse of sales at the show, we know of one dealer who sold $4,000 worth in six sales and others who did well, including sales of all things—furniture! Only lack of dealer participation prevented the show from ending up “in the black.” Jackie and Graham Nye will be chairing the show committee effective immediately. We encourage members to offer their suggestions to Jackie and Graham, as well as offering their help for further success.
BROCHURE COMMITTEE – John and Linda Pierce have offered to head up the Brochure committee, and we look forward to working with them. Again, offers of help will be greatly appreciated!
